It’s been a few days since I’ve been back from my journey to meet my doctor. I want to attempt to describe the care I’m getting. I’m afraid it feels like a bit of a challenge to explain the essence of the care.
I’ve been working with my doctor for about 3 months. In that time I went from sleeping 2 -3 hours a night, at best. (sometimes I didn’t sleep at all) I was bedridden most of the time and even found sitting up in a comfortable chair too exhausting. Holding the phone to my ear exhausted my arm too much. Leaving the house was almost impossible. I was extremely nauseas most mornings and I had headaches about 50% of the time. I had stopped tapering entirely for the previous 3 months. I really didn’t know if I was going to be able to continue at all.
When I called my doctor the first time she did her best to say no to me. She did not want to take on someone so seriously ill. She generally works with people before they have descended into serious withdrawal illness. She helps them withdraw from a relatively healthy space or alternately she takes people who need help but who are drug naive and she helps them avoid getting into the med trap at all. She had not taken someone like me on before.
From everything I had read about her and simply from talking to her for about an hour when I called her that first time I knew she understood my condition better than anyone I had spoken to in the last 2 years. She truly understood my condition and because of that she didn’t want to take me on. I think I frightened her slightly. She thought I would test the limits of her knowledge.
What I heard in her hesitation to take me on though was the voice of someone who really got it and who was therefore humble enough to admit she might not have all the answers. I’ve had one doctor after another tell me how they’d have me fixed up in a matter of weeks if I did a few simple tests and took an additional supplement or two. I was sick of being disappointed.
This doctor make no promises. She saw clearly and I didn’t let her off the phone until she agreed to work with me.
I started getting better within 3 weeks following her advice. Within a month I was tapering again. She is as happy as I am to have taken me on. She feels I am teaching her. Sometimes are conversations are almost collegial as I have studied so much. She told me the other day that I know more than most doctors she knows. I already knew that, but it was nice to hear it from a doctor. I laughed when she said that and said, “I know that, but I don’t know as much as you do! That is why I”m so glad I’ve found you.”
So what is she doing that is helping so much? First she pays very close attention to everything I say. She looks for patterns and finds them, even when I don’t, even though I write things down. She is alert and attentive. She actively studies expressly to learn about my case. In one instance after one of our appointments talking about my so far extremely difficult Lamictal withdrawal, I got a phone call about an hour after the appointment was over. She had been studying the PDR (”physicians desk reference” which is a catalog of all pharmaceuticals.) While all doctors have a PDR on their desk, very few will read the entire fine print on any given drug. Well that is what she had done after getting off the phone with me!
She had made a potentially important discovery: She found that Lamictal inhibits Sodium ion channels which in turn stops the cell membrane from firing. She surmised, with what she knows about chemistry, that to offset this action during my withdrawal I would need to take Potassium Chloride. This she hypothesized would calm my nerves down and ease the Lamictal withdrawal.
This was a theory and an experiment. I started taking half a teaspoon of Potassium Chloride the following day. It’s not available as a supplement—I bought Morton’s Salt Substitute!! $1.83. The most amazing thing happened once I added that to my regime. Within 24 hours I was out and about again, driving, running errands, seeing friends and walking. It was mind boggling and wondrous.
(Word of caution: Potassium Chloride is potentially dangerous if too much is taken. A friend of mine told me it was used in China for executions. It can lower blood pressure dangerously and therefore you should not treat yourself without a doctors guidance with this method.)
I had started getting much better before I added the Potassium Chloride as well though. I am taking a rather stunning assortment of supplements. Some of which I had never heard of before—which given how much I’ve studied surprised me. It was those supplements that got me started toward wellness before she ever added the Potassium. This, unfortunately, is not something you “can do at home.” She is monitoring about 50 supplements that are healing and detoxing me. This is not a regime I will stay on for the rest of my life. I am not replacing a life long addiction to medications with a huge regime of supplements. The supplements are strictly being used to HEAL me. They will be withdrawn once off the drugs and once I’m healthy again. A promise never made to us with medications which we are told we will need forever. I will, without a doubt, stay on some sort of maintenance bare bones regime once healthy. But personally I think everyone should be on some basic supplement regime for optimal health.
Also oddly enough, that amount of supplements still cost less per month then my medications!! And I’m coming close to being off meds. Soon they will outcost my meds, but when I was on my full cocktail, my meds were several times the cost of these supplements. The supplements heal while the meds make me sicker. It’s a no brainer to invest in the supplements.
The last part of how she heals me is the hardest to talk about. I’ve touched on it some in past posts. One of the ways she figures out the optimal amounts of each supplement for me is through energy work. She “muscle tests” to “feel” what is right for me. She is not some nutty new age spiritual believer and neither am I. She is as amazed and respectful of the awesome work she does as I am. She is grounded and humble and lacks the arrogance almost every other orthomolecular doctor I’ve encountered has in spades.
How she fell upon this work is a story that is hers to tell not mine. She is astounded by it as much as I am.
Without getting too much into detail, though, she “feels” what is the right dose of everything for me. You can look up “muscle testing” on google if you want. You can find some videos on youtube on it. One thing I do think, however, is that whoever does muscle testing has to have a lot of integrity and be extremely honest with themselves. I wouldn’t trust just anyone to do muscle testing. It’s too subject to personal bias and subjectivity in my opinion. But I do trust my doctor now. She has proven her excellence.
The last thing she does is energy work on my bodies energy field. We do this over the phone and we did it in person. I also do energy work on my own at home. It’s clear this helps tremendously too. I’m very sensitive to energy and I can feel it flowing through me when we do the work together. This part of the treatment is spiritual. She calls the flow of energy, “life energy.” If someone is religious they can think of it as being the power of their god. Otherwise it is simply the wisdom of the universe come to heal us.
So she is a master orthomolecular psychiatrist who understands nutrients and the body better than anyone I’ve met. She is a scientest who reads the PDR and extrapolates treatments based on a drugs actions on the body. And she is an energy healer.
We are both thrilled at how well I’m responding.
She does say that my attitude is in large part a help too. I really want to get better and was willing to put up with initial discomforts and an ongoing certain amount of experimentation. I’m also in this for the long haul. I’m by no means all better. I am relatively much better, but far from well.
There are many more particulars I could share and perhaps I will over time.

Hi Gianni,
I am always so excited when I hear of anything close to what you are describing because of the fact that it demonstrates over and over again that so much can be done with micronutrients as opposed to meds … with the caveat that one have a fine physician such as the one you describe.
While my contact with individuals with a bipolar background is rare, I am consistently thrilled to be able to pass on information such as that provided by you through your own willingness and courage to experiment in order to come out of this on the other side.
Chapeau! And much good luck.
Gabriella Kortsch
This is awesome, Gianna. I don’t think a lot of people understand how helpful energy work can be. I’ve had it done and found it very healing, and my mom had it done in the hospital for pain control–she had a hip replacement, and she does not tolerate narcotics well. It worked wonderfully for her.
Welcome Gabriella and I’m so pleased to be able to share with you.
Jazz,
I hesitate to talk about the energy work because I am SOOO not into New Age stuff and it sounds so touchy feely and out there, but it’s just NOT.
I asked my doctor while she was doing the work on me—does anyone ever come here and think you’re nuts. She calmly said no because they can feel the work. It’s utterly tangible and palpable and she didn’t even touch me!
And even over the phone I can feel it…
oh…one of the people who was harassing me was also ridiculing me about the energy stuff…it wasn’t so nice to be ridiculed even if I know it’s working.
Gianna,
This is nothing short of a miracle. When I think of how ill you were–even a month ago–and how well you are now, it is surely a testament to your doctor and to you.
There are so few of us who are willing to work so hard for wellness, and it’s so heartening that you’ve finally turned the corner and seem to be getting better every day (although I know there are still periods of feeling ill interspersed with periods of feeling well).
I always find it interesting (and downright annoying) when others are critical of something that “works,” just because it’s out of their frame of reference. But the fact is that no one can argue with the results. You’re truly healing and on your way to wellness!
That said…my heartfelt congratulations!
Susan
although I know there are still periods of feeling ill interspersed with periods of feeling well
I think it’s important for people to know I still do indeed have very bad moments. I’m basically toxic on the drugs and sometimes it still feels overwhelming…it’s a two steps forward one step back sort of thing.
I will try to do a post soon in which I describe in more detail the healing process, which does, indeed, still involve feeling really crappy from time to time…
No one should think I’m completely well just yet…
My body has suffered severe damage and it will probably still take at least a couple of years to truly be completely healed.
Right now I’m happy if I can be out and about for 2 hours—-I’m ecstatic when it climbs to 4 hours—but like I said my feeling well comes and goes…
thank you Susan for your love and support!
A lot of food for thought here Gianna. Your doc sounds like a gem.
“It’s utterly tangible and palpable and she didn’t even touch me!”
That’s what I found amazing about energy work. My mom is one of the most straight laced, non-new-age people I know, but when she was in hospital after her hip replacement and in so much pain, and the narcotics they tried made her so sick, they asked her if she wanted to try a program they called “healing hands”. This is a hospital that incorporates a lot of alternative treatments in with their traditional care. She was desperate, so she agreed, although she told me she didn’t think it would do anything for her, but at that point she was ready to try anything. They did a combination of aromatherapy, relaxing music, and energy work of the sort my friend does, where they don’t even touch you, just work with your energy fields. My mom ended up drifting off to sleep, and woke up in a lot less pain. She’s a believer now, and is seeing an alternative practitioner for pain she’s having in her neck. Her next step is to ask about accupuncture–and it’s really amazing to hear my ultra-traditional mother talking about giving accupuncture a try!
I’m so glad you’ve found something that’s working for you! I think people who are open minded about the kind of treatment options they are willing to explore have a much better chance of becoming well, don’t you?
And if people think it’s crazy and would never try it, well, that’s their loss, isn’t it?
You go, girl! Don’t let those closed-minded people bring you down. You know what’s working for you.
Love,
Jazz
Thank you again for such a posting. Your doctor is so remarkable. It’s great that you have found such a doctor with all her talents. Its good to hear the positive side to your withdrawal. Best Wishes
I don’t know if you’ve named your doctor before here, but you should. On the autism listserves, we are constantly trading names and the best recommendation, in my book, is often from another in your shoes. We need to share this information fast and furiously because as you pointed out, there are many docs out there who do no one any good at all.
Thanks for this honest and meticulous post, Sue
Great! Now you can visit more often! LOL You may want to tell me who your doctor is, but if she’s out of the area we can forget my being able to get there…
Hugs,
Moss
Sue,
I absolutely understand how you feel about spreading the good news.
If people are interested in who my doctor is they can email me with a request. I don’t feel comfortable using names that can be searched on my blog.
I found this doctor on the listserv we are both on Sue. So you have heard of her.
Moss,
No she is not local…I took a four day road trip to meet her after working remotely with her for three months.
This is so exciting! Your post and the comments are all wonderful to read. Even though I have not been with you and the others long it sounds like a true act or actions of healing is happening for you. I have had body work done and it is healing. Even though I will continue on meds it is helpful to hear what a difference it has made for you. We are all looking to those healing practices that will bring wellness. Peace Annie
I’m so pleased that you’ve found the help you need to complete the journey of recovery! Those four stressful days spent on the road will be worth every second!
This is fabulous news! Thanks for explaining it so well, too.
I’ve had similar results with topical magnesium chloride except
that I use it for anxiety and depression in small amounts.
The result was that my anxiety improved by 50%.
I am going to check out potassium chloride to see if
I can use it for the other 50%.
J!!
Potassium chloride is not treating anxiety it is being used for to combat a drug reaction caused by Lamictal—it is not an anti-anxiety agent!!
I don’t recommend your using it willy nilly for something like anxiety…
And did you notice I explicitly said it SHOULD NOT be used without a doctors care??
Hey Gianna, I can attest to the amazingness that is energy work, as well. It works extremely well with children too. A local psychologist introduced me to it over a number of sessions, and my childrens’ school counsellor does a bit of it in the form of EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique). VERY effective stuff, and I don’t consider it to be New Agey type stuff, even though a lot of people do. It’s the way we are made! People say/think a lot of things out of fear. Sad, but true. Thanks for sharing this great info with us about your treatment.

Hey Gianna,
while trying to catch up on your posts, i notice that you have 2 “j’s.” i haven’t read ALL of your entries and comments (yet lol). i’m sorry if i used someone else’s name–i’ll use j12, from now on. (I’m the mom who posted last week.) i’m also concerned re: supplement (ab)use, such as KCL–glad you posted and reposted the warnings. it would be good if all supplements were carefully studied (as you’ve been doing with your doc’s care) before someone decides to ingest them…even things like aspirin and epsom and table salts. i love the Hippocrates quote: let your food be your medicine and your medicine be your food….so i’m going to go eat some watermelon while i read your latest entries. (:D ‘bet you heard about those health benefits!) have a good day, GK!
before I get distracted by a comment I’d like to make first,
congratulations on your ongoing recovery Gianna! It is good to hear you upbeat and optimistic about your wd.
Just out of curiosity, where did your doc get her energy training from? I wonder if it is anyone I know or have heard of in the energy healing circles.
Now for the Lamictal.
Ok so, this stuff is screwing around with your sodium ion channels and your doc just now recently found this out via fine print reading?
This is serious serious business! You are able to move physically, because your muscles alter the position of your skeleton in relation to gravity. Everything from walking to holding the phone requires the constant activation of the sodium ion channel to cause the nerves to send the signals to the muscles to move.
No sodium ion channels, no movement. Excessive sodium action and you get spastic. Some critters in nature actually have poisons which either speed up or slow down sodium ion action in their prey which causes them to either twitch spastically or to become paralyzed.
If Lamictal is screwing around with sodium ion action, not only is it unshocking that you have had no energy but also it should have been expected!
That actually is big news. Worthy of Philip’s blog as an article in it’s own right. Lamictal causes muscle and energy weakness via sodium channels? That is iatrogenesis! That is the very definition of a medically induced health problem! That side effect should be on the package label in huge letters!
Your heart is a muscle too and absolutely effected by sodium pump action. Not too long ago you had a post about a pain in the heart. I know some of that pain is emotional and spiritual but I was one of the folks that suggested a medical reason behind it. There you go, Lamictal weakens your heart along with all the other muscles and nerve firings!
This puts Lamictal on my list of most dangerous drugs currently touted as *medicine* along side neuroleptics.
You really did get screwed over with polypharmacy Gianna, just the Lamictal alone sounds like a major health hazard without the load of the other meds.
Word to the wise I guess, get off Lamictal before it is too late and your have artificially induced epstein barr forever
Hey Jane,
Philip won’t write about something that hasn’t been properly studied and proven.
That’s the problem with the mental health system…no money to do the real work…potassium chloride is dirt cheap…
ahhh…I’m tired right now…
thanks for your input…
I shouldn’t say that about Philip…he sticks his neck out a lot…but something like this is so anecdotal…
I know he finds it interesting…I shared it with him, but what is there really to report on a journalists blog?
Hi Gianna (and “thanks for making it easy to understand Jane”),
so is that how lithium works on nerve fibers, too, since it can replace sodium ions? if i understand it correctly, lithium is just a salt, and it’s found in lemons, tobacco, (mineral water, of course) and other foods in small amounts…hmm…if KCL (in small amounts, under a doc’s supervision) works, maybe lithium is not so bad????? it just seems the recommended doses are so much higher than that found in nature–no wonder the side effects seem so ominous…if you get a chance, would you let me know about your thoughts on using lithium (or send me to an old post on it?)…
PS the more i read your blog, the more i love it. thank you so much!
There are forms of Lithium that can be taken as a supplement that are not toxic to the body like Lithium Carbonate.
Taking small doses either homeopathic, or taking Lithium Orotate in which a fraction of the amount of Carbonate is consumed can be healthy…I have no idea how it works on sodium ion channels…I’m simply not a scientist.
