The awakened heart is a broken heart

by Martyn Webber

There’s grief in awakening. Grief at the loss of autonomy, grief at the loss of purpose and meaning. Grief at the loss of knowing and certainty, however deluded they were. There’s grief over losing one’s power, and one’s familiar identity.

There’s so much loss in awakening. When it dawns that there’s nothing we can keep, nothing can be retained beyond its prescribed time, and all that we know and love must pass, then a natural grief for all of it can come. And since this knowledge of loss is for all of it, for all time, then that ache of grief is an ever-present refrain, a broken heart, amidst the delight at the miracle and mystery of life.

We know this poignancy, this pathos, because it’s familiar, it’s part of us, and it’s not wrong. It’s not something to be avoided or excised. We must comfort ourselves and each other tenderly, as we struggle to find the inevitable ground of acceptance.

More on GRIEF on this website — this is a favorite collection What if grief is the natural order of things, a way of loving life anyway?

Skepticism is a healthy process that aids discernment…

Let’s not demonize the skeptic! While anything can be taken too far, skepticism is a must for healthy individuals in our dog-eat-dog world.

I made this rather sarcastic observation recently:

” I don’t know what to do with myself. I guess I’ll be a life coach.”

Nothing like somebody who couldn’t figure out what  to do with themselves coaching others on how to deal with not knowing what to do with themself.

The guru is within. Look no further.

Someone told me that the above comments (first tweeted) were too skeptical and that people need support. This was my response:

Skepticism is a very healthy impulse…don’t let anyone tell you different.

Going to extremes with anything will end up being not so helpful…but skepticism will also keep you alive when employed with good sense. If we had all employed healthy skepticism many of us wouldn’t have ended up on psych drugs at all.

Falling for the marketing of “support” is a good way to spend a lot of money to get harmed by predatory folks who imagine they’re do-gooders (inside and outside of psychiatry this is a common human problem, really and happens with all the so-called helping professions).

The most vulnerable folks do not do well with healers from the marketplace.  Learning to employ skepticism allows one to learn to listen to the body/mind/spirit and thus develop discernment. This isn’t about not getting help. It’s about getting appropriate and healthy support organically from our inner-driven knowledge earned once we learn how to discern in a process that require skepticism.  Once we know how to listen that may mean sometimes  employing a “life-coach.” More often it probably doesn’t. That’s all. Anything is possible. Enjoy that really good life coach if you’ve got one.

Capitalism makes predators of everyone and if we’re not aware the most sensitive among us get trashed. …I keep one foot in the world where people are harmed at all times so that I can point out info that helps elucidate the issues. No blinders. Blinders are denial. Denial is spiritual bypass.  Spiritual bypass is the norm.

AND yes, I could use some compensation for the many 100s of hours I’ve worked with folks over the years. Working like we do and not getting any sort of compensation that I might live more comfortably in the face of continued challenges continues to teach us what we’ve learned from psychiatry. We must not be worth it. Let’s change that patterning. If I helped you or a loved one out, please help me back now. thank you.

Say yes…

Listen to the body. It has all our ancestors within. Lots of mothers and fathers from the beginning of time…all recorded in our DNA. We also have access to the entire living collective via our body and spirit, both.

Dimensions will endlessly multiply. They are the same thing as voices in the so-called psychotic. Watch it all — don’t get sucked in — every “dimension” will collapse into one.

***

Motivation is largely unconscious and connected to our ancestral lineage. It doesn’t actually have any rational sense in any sort of conventional sense. We tell a lot of stories about motivation but ultimately we don’t even actually have much if any control over what it is we do. Because we are the accumulated result of our ancestors and we come to consciousness as a cog in that line of beings– we discover something unique to us and bring that new data in for the entire human species and the one connected entity that is everything…

We are infected with our own unlived lives.

Is anyone not insane?

In response to this question from the last two posts “Is anyone not insane?” Paul Woodward, my partner, responded with the below:

Among the multitude of dualities we struggle with, the most persistent is perhaps the struggle to impose order on disorder — control on the uncontrollable.

I was thinking about this a couple of days ago and applying one of the cultural lens I use so often, along with biology.

Homeostasis seems to be one of the most fundamental processes in biology and from a Western perspective, homeostasis looks like order.

What it really is, however, is the balancing of opposites and this isn’t a concept that’s really embraced in the West.

We look at these as a struggle between competing forces in which one will ultimately defeat the other. So there’s a perpetual struggle for domination — good against evil, sanity against insanity, order against chaos, etc.

In Western thought, there’s no counterpart to yin-yang. But that’s surely the only way of coming to any kind of resolution: to embrace everything and exclude nothing.

ah, a man after my own heart. 🥰 I often call my healing process one of the marriage of opposites. Of course, I explain my process in many ways. The bringing together of opposites is pretty fundamental, however. Embracing spectrums and bringing together opposites. They collapse at some point into simply the whole.

Myth, metaphor and coming to awareness…

Metaphor and myth must be relied on when the nervous system cannot handle reality. This isn’t a joke it’s very serious. Trauma embeds and it’s too painful to tolerate… as we heal we start to be able to heal the excruciatingly painful psycho/spiritual dimension as embedded in the body

Stories keep us safe. We like to make fun of other peoples stories but the truth is they are all equal. The secret is everyone is feeling too challenged to face the gloriousness and horrendousness of reality.

On the subject of myth and metaphor, if you take delight in such things, Lucifer on Netflix is the most delicious entertainment I’ve had in awhile. Nothing like life force blaring its message through popular TV programs. What fun!

a friend said: sometimes in our lives stories are as important as food. And I agree, they pretty much always are (in one way or another)…it’s the only way we can frame the mystery… non-attachment to the stories allows for freedom, however.

You are the entire cast of characters of every mythology there ever was. We are all the entire cast of characters of the entire collective conscious and unconscious (and then some). Yea, Walt Whitman, is right, all of us contain the entire multitude.

And a bit of Walt Whitman: “Copulation is no more rank to me than death is. I believe in the flesh and the appetites, Seeing, hearing, feeling are miracles, and each part and tag of me is a miracle.” — Do I contradict myself? Very well then, I contradict myself, (I am large, I contain multitudes.)

Waking up is, in one regard, simply the cessation of fear. See: Fear and anxiety: coping, reframing, transforming…

This is a planet of suffering. As we become conscious we can inflict less harm but we do not stop inflicting what appears harmful altogether. When we profoundly understand that, being awake allows us to celebrate the whole entire spectrum. Good versus bad ceases to have meaning.

Reflections on learning to FLY

Difficult people of all stripes are simply God wearing different costumes.
The scary costume.
The horror costume.
The ugly costume.
The dangerous costume. Etc

When we open our hearts God is truly everywhere. Dancing with us. Look into the eyes of our brothers and sisters and say HELLO

***

In general when people are unpleasant it’s because they’re hurting. By not seeing this and treating folks who are already hurting badly we actually compound the problem-It’s important to understand that when we do that we hurt ourselves too because we’re all part of this collective

We will never heal as a collective if we avoid everyone we find difficult. Difficult people are traumatized and hurt people. We need to start loving them deeply and profoundly. Those difficult parts are within us too and thus we need to stop pointing at the “bad ones” outside of us and deal with those parts within us.

Compassion isn’t about feeling shitty for someone else. it’s about holding space for the other to be who they are…even as we learn to do that for ourselves…

***

the whole idea that we have control of pretty much anything remains one of the favorite delusions of the ego.

if you truly understand the mind there is no need for control. Control is an illusion anyway. In flow, in alignment the concept of control disappears as clarity replaces it.

our lack of capacity to control pretty much anything at all is why SURRENDER to the whole is the only way to go. Giving up any hope for any control and losing one self thereby…that’s the practice.

***

Healthy boundaries flow and are seamless and artful. Contrived boundaries are forced and often cruel and violent. Mental health professionals are taught contrived boundaries because natural boundaries cannot be taught and systems rely on contrived boundaries.

Capitalism relies on a population of addicts. Capitalism is a perfect reflection of our hearts desperately seeking love and attaching to all the wrong things.

The level of despair in our population is excruciatingly painful if we’re awake. Otherwise we just point the finger at everyone who we say is the problem. Feel into our culture and society. It is in feeling that despair and pain that we release it and heal ourselves and others.

In the United States, like it or not, we are all spawn of the patriarchy. None of us are free from that reality –male or female– we are children of the sick system. We change it by lovingly transmuting it within us and without us.

The idea that we have any control is an illusion of the ego– it’s certainly a comforting thought. Surrender is the only way to find oneself in alignment with life force and in surrender there is no control. — We may not be able to control our thoughts and feelings but we can simply watch them and not engage them that is a part of developing Consciousness and not particularly a choice that involves control.

With chronic illness we learn to manage the multiple microorganisms in our bodies. We have a community living in our body. Just as we must learn to live with our diverse human family, we need to learn to manage and host our bodies diverse population of microorganisms. This is everybody’s task however it becomes critically important and one must become highly conscious about what is happening in the body when one becomes chronically Ill because the balance of the microorganisms gets extraordinarily skewed.

The bacteria in our microbiome is not some inconsequential collection. bacteria fungus and whatever else collects there is essentially, who we are, how we feel and what we believe. We are always a community when we are alone as well as when we are together as animals and beings.

Mini meditations for your pleasure in contemplation…
